Distinguishing characteristics - Look at the tail end of Sepedon to identify it. The spiracular disk on the final segment has 10 lobes in total (Fig. B). The head is retracted into the body (Fig. C).

Notes - There are 16 species of Sepedon. They live on debris in still waters where they burrow into snails and eat them. These marsh flies are found in various areas around North America. We have collected very few in North Dakota rivers and streams.
