Distinguishing characteristics - The shore bugs are small, oval shaped bugs. The antennae are longer than the head (Fig. A). They have large hind coxae (Fig. B). Their eyes are rather large and and have a bulging appearance (Fig. C). Adult Saldidae wings have 4 or 5 cells on the distal margin (Fig. D). The immature shore bugs have no wings (Fig. E).

Notes - They can be found along the shore of most any aquatic habitat, although they have been rarely collected in our samples. They're mostly piercers which usually prey on Diptera larvae, others are scavengers or carnivores. The size of the Shore Bugs at maturity is 2-8 mm.
