Distinguishing characteristics - Dixid midges have several features similar to the Mosquito larvae such as an exposed sclerotized head, mouth brushes, and simple antennae (Fig. B). However, the presence of prolegs on abdominal segments one and two help distinguish it from most other Diptera larvae (Fig. C). Also, unlike the mosquitoes, the segments of the thorax are usually distinct. The abdomen ends with a respiratory tube (Fig. D, white arrow) and lateral paddlelike structures (Fig. D, black arrow).

Notes - The dixid larvae are found in slow moving areas of streams, ponds, lakes, and marshes. They feed on small decomposing organic matter. The size of the dixid midge larvae at maturity is 3-7 mm.
