Family Stratiomyidae

Key to Stratiomyidae Larvae. This key covers larvae of the 5 genera of Stratiomyidae that we have collected in North Dakota rivers and streams. This key aids by providing simple features you can look for to identify your specimen. After using the key, confirm the identity of your specimen by reading the genus page.

 
Genus Nemotelus - The spiracular cleft is on top of the last segment, rather than at the tip (Fig. 1). The final segment has a concave tip (Fig. 2). Overall appearance as in Figure 3.

Group 1 - The antennae are located on the top of the head (Fig. 4 and 5). Includes the genera Caloparyphus and Euparyphus.

Group 2 - The antennae are located on the side of the head (Fig. 6 and 7). Includes the genera Odontomyia and Stratiomys.
