Family Empididae

Key to Empididae Larvae. This key covers larvae of the 2 genera of Empididae that we have collected in North Dakota rivers and streams. This key aids by providing simple features you can look for to identify your specimen. After using the key, confirm the identity of your specimen by reading the genus page.

 
Genus Hemerodromia - Seven prolegs are visible on the ventral surface (Fig. 1). On the last body segment a clearly divided lobe can be found (Fig. 2). The overall body appears as in Figure 3.

Genus Trichoclinocera - Eight prolegs can be found on the ventral surface (Fig. 4). The final body segment has two extensions (black arrows) and a lobe (white arrow), which may be divided (Fig. 5). The overall body appears as in Figure 6.
