Family Dixidae

Key to Dixidae Larvae. This key covers larvae of the 2 genera of Dixidae that we have collected in North Dakota rivers and streams. This key aids by providing simple features you can look for to identify your specimen. After using the key, confirm the identity of your specimen by reading the genus page.

Genus Dixa - On the dorsal side of the second through seventh abdominal segments (after the first 3 thoracic segments) look for a circle of hairs (Fig. 1). The first two abdominal segments bear prolegs (Fig. 2). Overall appearance as in Figure 3.

Genus Dixella - There is no circle of hairs on the dorsal side of abdominal segments 2 through 7 (Fig. 4). Prolegs may also be visible on the abdominal segments (Fig. 5). Body appears as in Figure 6.
