Genus Hydatophylax - The third thoracic segment has a fused sclerite (Fig. 1). The case is made of pieces of wood and may include some grass (Fig. 2). Overall appearance as in Figure 3.

Genus Pycnopsyche - The third thoracic segment has narrowly separate sclerites (Fig. 4). The case is made of leaves, twigs and/or gravel (Fig. 5). Overall appearance as in Figure 6.

Genus Anabolia - The third thoracic segment has separate sclerites (Fig. 7). On side of the pronotum, towards the front, are small spines (Fig. 8). The case is made of plant parts and may be three-sided (Fig. 9). Overall appearance as in Figure 9.

Genus Limnephilus - The third thoracic segment has separate sclerites (Fig. 10). On side of the pronotum, towards the front, are setae, but no small spines (Fig. 11).. Ventral gills have 3 or fewer branches (Fig. 12). The cases vary widely (Fig. 13). Overall appearance as in Figure 13.
