Order Diptera

Genus Prionocera
Distinguishing characteristics - Features on the final segments of this larvae will help you identify it. At the tip of the final segment are six to eight spiracular lobes. They are all long, with the side and bottom ones being 3-4 times as long as their width (Fig. B, dorsal view). Each spiracular lobe has a dark line running along itís middle (Fig. C). The lobes have many long hairs along their margins (Fig. D).

Tolerance Value - 4

Feeding Group - Shredder

Notes - There are 16 species of Prionocera. They typically live in still waters, which explains why we have collected them so infrequently. These crane fly larvae generally burrow in matter at the bottom of the water body. They are found in many places in North America.
