Family Caenidae - Enlarged gills on abdominal segment two operculate, meaning they cover other gills, meet along the midline and are rectangular in shape (Fig. 1). The overall appearance is similar to Figure 2.

Family Leptohyphidae - Gills on segment two operculate but do not meet at the midline and are triangular in shape (Fig. 3). Generally appear as in Figure 4.

Family Heptageniidae - Head is greatly flattened horizontally (Fig. 5), gills not operculate. Overall appearance like Figure 6.
