Family Dixidae - Paired prolegs bearing crochet on first and usually second abdominal segments (Fig. 1). Appearance as in Figure 2.

Family Simuliidae - Abdominal segments lacking prolegs excluding anal segment, prothorax with one proleg (Fig. 3) and head with a pair of labral fans (Fig. 4). General appearance as Figure 5.

Family Chironomidae - Head lacking labral fans (Fig. 6), abdominal segments lacking prolegs excluding anal segment, prothorax with one proleg, and body segments without tubercles and setae (Fig. 7). Overall appearance as in Figure 8.

Family Ceratopogonidae - Abdominal segments lacking prolegs excluding anal segment, prothorax with no prolegs, body segments usually not subdivided and integument smooth, shiny and white (Fig. 9).

Family Psychodidae - Abdominal segments lacking prolegs excluding anal segment (Fig. 10), prothorax with no prolegs and body segments subdivided into 2 or 3 subdivisions which bear sclerotized plates (Fig. 11) and integument with numerous dark spots giving the larva a grayish brown color. Overall appearance as in Figure 12.
