Order Hemiptera - The Water Treaders
Distinguishing characteristics - Their antennae are longer than head (Fig. B), they have long slender legs with spines (Fig. C) that have three segmented tarsi (Fig. D) and all claws are apical (Fig. E).

Genus Mesovelia: One genus of Mesoveliidae has been found in North Dakota, Mesovelia. They are an example of water bugs in which adults may be winged, partially winged, or have no wings at all.

Feeding Group - Predator

Notes - The water treaders are found on the surface of still bodies of water such as ponds or lakes. They can also be found crawling on mats of algae or floating vegetation. They feed primarily by scavenging. The size of the water treaders at maturity is 2-4 mm.
