Distinguishing characteristics - The antennae are inserted forward of the eyes and are longer than the head. This specimen is missing its 3rd segment on both antennae (Fig. B). The claws of all legs are inserted at the tips of the tarsi (Fig. C). The head (black brackets) is as long or longer than the length of the pronotum and scutellum combined (white brackets) (Fig. D).

Notes - The Hydrometridae, known as marsh treaders or water measurers, will measure 8-11 mm as adults. They live on vegetation along the edges of quiet waters, and are able to walk on water without breaking the surface tension. They are predators that lie and wait or stalk their prey and often times scavenge.
