Order Diptera - The Aquatic Longlegged Flies
Distinguishing characteristics - The larvae of this group have a head capsule partially retracted within thorax (Fig. B) and posterior spiracles on the end of the last abdominal segment which are found in a pit like structure (Fig C). They also have transverse ventral welts on abdominal segments (Fig D).

Feeding Group - Predator

Notes - We have collected these larvae sporadically in several regions of the state. They larvae are predators which are found in ponds, streams, and the damp shores of aquatic habitats. The size of the aquatic longlegged flies at maturity is 2-7 mm.
