Distinguishing characteristics - As might be expected with the shape of their case, the body is strongly curved (Fig. A). They also differ from other caddisfly larvae in that their anal claw has a comb of teeth (Fig. B). The dorsal side of their second thoracic segment has well develped or connecting sclerites (Fig. C). The snailcase makers are named for their snail shaped case (Fig. D).

Notes - The Helicopsyche is a small family, only having one known genera in the world. This small group of Trichoptera is not very common in North Dakota waters. However the waters of choice seem to be the running waters of rivers and the littoral lakes. The Helicopsyche have a broad temperature tolerance. They actually are omnivorous and can be found in a variety of habitats. Their cases are made from rocks and look like a snail shell.
