Distinguishing characteristics - The clubtails have a four segmented antennae with the third segment large and the fourth segment small (Fig. B). and the ligula is lacking a median cleft (Fig. C). The prementum and palpal lobes of the labium are flat or nearly so (Fig. D). They have two segmented tarsus on the midleg (Fig. E).

Notes - Clubtail larvae are burrowing predators which lie in wait for their prey. They are found in a variety of aquatic habitats including rivers and ponds. They overwinter as eggs. The size of clubtail nymphs at maturity is 23-40 mm and sometimes 65 mm.
